About

John Oates became a primary school teacher in 1991. His first job was at a large, four form entry, junior school in the Knotty Ash district of Huyton, Liverpool. John spent seven years at this school, working as a classroom teacher in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. He had the role of music subject leader as well as taking various sporting club roles.

In 1998 John moved to a single form entry school in Croft, Warrington. He spent 5 years working here as classroom teacher with responsibility for music and school assessment. Whilst teaching at this school John applied for and became an Advanced Skills Teacher for primary music in June 2002.

In September 2003 John moved to a two-form entry school in the Westbrook area of Warrington. This new position was as full-time music specialist (AST) with one day 'OUTREACH' to support other schools in coordination with the LEA, Music Service and lately 'Accent' Music Hub. As well as being responsible for the school's musical development John also developed British Council links with schools in South Africa and arranged several reciprocal visits.

Since January 2022 John has continued to work four days per week as music specialist (AST) within his third school but now operates as a freelance music CPD provider/music consultant on a Tuesday.

Please get in touch if you feel you would like to access John's 31 years of experience and enhance your school's music provision. johnoates66@yahoo.co.uk
